Month of the Sea

A Generation Taking Action for Ocean Protection

Five young hikers with backpacks and walking sticks trek through shallow water along a sunny beach

Every November, thousands of young scouts from across Portugal come together to celebrate the Month of the Sea, an initiative combining environmental education, active citizenship, and direct contact with nature. The programme is run in partnership with Oceano Azul Foundation, the Oceanário de Lisboa, and the country’s main scouting youth associations:

During this month, participants take part in clean-up activities along coastal areas, beaches, riverbanks, and streams, aiming to raise awareness, inspire sustainable behaviours, and strengthen young people’s connection to the ocean.

A celebration with impact

In 2025, the Month of the Sea marked its 7th consecutive edition:

  • 5,347 young participants
  • Over 100 clean-up actions
  • +80km of coastline and riverbanks cleaned
  • Over 9 tonnes of marine litter collected

For the first time, the initiative also included the participation of more than 3,100 students and teachers from 60 schools across the country.

The initiative stands out for its decentralised, educational, collaborative, and family-oriented nature. It involves scouting groups from across the country and encourages families to join in, creating a truly shared experience of environmental stewardship.
