International Ocean Advocacy

Influencing the ocean agenda and assisting international decision makers to make sound and informed decisions.

Our Goal

The International Ocean Advocacy aims at promoting integrated ocean governance, based upon ethical values and rooted in scientific knowledge, as well as to support an environmentally friendly innovative blue economy.

International policies must increasingly be thought of from an integrated perspective to combat the planetary challenges of this century. That is why Oceano Azul Foundation is playing a crucial role in influencing international debate and implementing positive policies in favour of the ocean.

  • – Work at the global multilateral level should also continue at UNFCCC.
  • – Work at the global multilateral level actively in three other fronts:
    • (i) opposing seabed mining.
    • (ii) promoting ratification of BBNJ.
    • (iii) promoting the protection of 30% of the ocean by 2030.
  • Work at the European level.

In 2023

The Foundation focused more and worked harder on highlighting the importance of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference, scheduled for 2025 and organised by France and Costa Rica.

• Oceano Azul Foundation and Costa Rica organised a meeting of United Nations Ambassadors to start a discussion on the plans and expectations for 2025, as well as a high-level meeting on “Ocean Action – Immersed in Change”.

• Oceano Azul Foundation adopted a very active voice at historic moments, such as the conclusion of the High Seas Treaty at the 78th General Assembly of the United Nations, signed by more than 80 member states.

• During COP28 in Dubai, promoting the importance of the ocean during the climate negotiations and the adoption of the first Global Stocktake. It organised another high-level ministerial dinner for the Friends of the Ocean and Climate, where it fought for the introduction of stronger blue language in the final text.
