International Coastal Cleanup Day 2021

Between the 18th and 26th of September, the world united via the movement supporting International Coastal Cleanup Day. Portugal contributed with over 240 entities organizing 174 coastal and underwater cleanups from the northern tip all the way south to the Algarve and crossing the ocean to the Azores and Madeira. Oceano Azul Foundation congratulates all who took part in this movement, from NGOs, diving centres, municipalities, associations, surf & bodyboard schools and civil society. These national cleanups gained international recognition via the integration with the #EUBeachCleanup campaign, in collaboration with the European Commission, European External Action Service and the United Nations.

Educating a Blue Generation

This year the teachers and students of the program ´Educating a Blue Generation´ actively participated in the movement. More than 1,300 students and teachers from 45 schools joined the cleanups together with Oceano Azul Foundation’s Ocean Leaders Frederico Morais and Joana Schenker.

Marine Natural Park of the Algarve Reef – Pedra do Valado

The municipalities of Albufeira, Lagoa and Silves, local citizens and NGOs joined the cleanups contributing to the protection of a very important area linking these three places together, namely the proposed Marine Natural Park of the Algarve Reef – Pedra do Valado. Being one of the largest natural coastal reefs in Portugal, it has unique natural conditions and marine biodiversity, therefore it urgently needs protection.

Oceano Azul Foundation celebrates the record achieved this third year taking part in this initiative, achieved by the collective drive of organizations and civil society joining together to protect our ocean.
