Capacity Sharing Programme on Sustainable Ocean Governance and Blue Economy

Oceano Azul Foundation developed a programme, in partnership with the Portuguese Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) aiming to provide high-level ocean policy officials from UN Member States with access to a capacity-sharing programme tailored to the needs of these decision-makers and empowering a new generation of leaders with the knowledge and skills to address pressing ocean-related issues.

Accomplishments

  • – 5-day seminar, 20-25 participants per seminar, and 25.5 teaching hours;
  • – 2024, 2025 and 2026 Editions: Focused on small island developing states (SIDS);
  • – 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030 Editions: Focused on developing states.

As nations heavily reliant on marine resources for socioeconomic development, SIDS face unique challenges exacerbated by climate change. Rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and extreme weather events threaten their coastal communities, while limited resources and capacity hinder effective management strategies.

“Small Island Developing States are ecologically fragile and vulnerable, yet their oceanic resources hold immense potential for sustainable development,” as stated by the United Nations.

The convergence of crises, from climate change to the economic fallout of COVID-19, underscores the urgency for action. SIDS, disproportionately impacted, require innovative solutions and partnerships to navigate these challenges.

Oceano Azul Foundation is committed to fostering sustainable ocean governance and facilitating access to resources for SIDS and developing countries.
