Aim
To implement a co-management committee for the Algarve octopus fishery, which will promote the sustainability of this resource as well as the traditional practices associated to this fishery. The increase in the abundance of octupuses and the value of catches will ensure more prosperous fishing communities.
Accomplishments:
- – Legal creation of the co-management committee (Order nº 84/2024/1), after ensuring the approval of more than 75% license holders for the octopus fishery in Algarve;
- – Based on a participatory process involving 14 fishing associations;
- – Recommendations for the structure of the committee, and for the management plan of this fishery;
- – Scientific data collected in the scope of this project allows to monitor fishing effort, identify fishing areas, and quantify this fishery bycatch;
- – Development of the “Economic study for the Algarve Octopus valuation”;
- – Recommendation to the Portuguese Parliament for the creation and financing of the co-management committee
