Pilot Project for Primary Education Schools in Portugal

A pilot programme on ocean education that has shown positive results and is ready to be scaled up nationally and internationally.

Aim

To promote ocean literacy in children between the ages of 5 and 11, qualifying a generation of citizens who are knowledgeable, responsible, and active in protecting the ocean. Through certified teacher training, educational resources, and enabling the cross-cutting integration of ocean literacy into the curriculum it is possible to mobilise for ocean action.

Accomplishments:

  • – 4-year longitudinal evaluation reveals an increase in students’ knowledge, and an increase in positive attitudes towards ocean conservation;
  • – 8 municipalities in mainland Portugal;
  • – 9 islands in the Azores Region;
  • – Large mobilisation of students with more than 22,000 participants in ocean literacy initiatives.
