In the coming years, the Oceano Azul Foundation aims to contribute to a paradigm shift in humanity’s relationship with nature and the ocean. This includes promoting the integration of the concept of Blue Natural Capital into mainstream economics and facilitating the financing of nature-based solutions, such as Marine Protected Areas. The value of the biosphere, and marine nature, needs to increase drastically if we are to be successful in its conservation and restoration. Therefore, some actions are being developed, and implemented.

Blue Natural Capital Mission Board

To value Blue Natural Capital, it is fundamental to design new frameworks of a legal, economic, and institutional nature to make natural capital part of mainstream economics. To contribute to such new frameworks, in 2024, the Foundation will start its work by creating a Mission Board with reputed experts, aimed at designing those frameworks, acting at the level of systemic change.

OECD Partnership

To better support the development of ocean policies, frameworks, and economics, Oceano Azul Foundation will work with OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), and the Portuguese Mission to OECD to commission an official study on the Blue Decarb Economy with a strong focus on the potential of the Blue Bioeconomy to decarbonize the planet.
