The Foundation

From the ocean’s point of view

Our Vision

A healthy ocean is essential for all life on Earth.

Our Mission

To restore and maintain the ocean’s health and productivity for the benefit of life on the planet.

Ocean Action is Climate Action

Biodiversity: the ocean covers about 71% of the Earth’s surface and is home to a diverse array of life.

Oxygen Production: approximately half of the planet’s oxygen is produced by marine phytoplankton.

Climate Regulation: it absorbs 25% of the carbon dioxide produced by human activity, mitigating the impacts of climate change. It also absorbs vast amounts of heat, helping to regulate global temperatures.

Economic Value: it provides livelihoods for millions of people through fisheries, tourism, shipping, and other marine-related industries.

Medicine: source of valuable pharmaceutical compounds. Marine organisms have contributed to the development of medications for pain, cancer, bacterial infections, and other diseases.

Cultural and Recreational Value: many coastal communities rely on the ocean for recreation and cultural activities.

Our Model of Change

Joining up the dots between key ocean issues by promoting the ocean-climate nexus and the conservation-economy connection through the concept of blue natural capital.

An integrated approach to all the Foundation’s programmes, weaving together the three axes of action to accelerate change.

Applying bottom-up solutions to programmes by developing decentralised decision-making processes bringing in grassroots and institutional stakeholders, particularly in establishing MPAs.

Using a surgical approach, pooling efforts, avoiding dispersion and focusing activity on key programmes and avenues of action, to achieve lasting transformational, scalable and replicable change.

Ocean Conservation
